Hannibal could hire someone to clean his house, and to be fair, sometimes he did. But when it really needed a good clean, he could really only trust himself.

Both the quality of the cleaning and the things possibly seen during said cleaning.

So, he was currently airing everything out so it didn't smell like cleaning fluid. And keeping an eye on Joni so she didn't decide to run out the door.

Well, he was. Until all of a sudden there was a pile of well-tailored clothing with a large king cobra in it.

The snake huffed and started making its way upstairs to the sauna. Looked like it was time for a nice, long nap.

comments

This really was possibly Hannibal's favorite holiday. There wasn't any other that revolved so much around food. This year, he'd given himself a challenge to use native foods, and had ended up with braised buffalo instead of turkey, with masa polenta and savory pumpkin. There was a turkey green chili tamale pie for those who preferred not to eat red meat, roasted winter squash for the vegetarians, blue corn stuffing and sweet berry wild rice, and frybread, and for dessert, blue corn pumpkin bread with cranberry compote and sweet corn maple ice cream, and a chocolate and pinñon nutcake.

The place was smelling wonderful, the door was open, invitations had gone out over email and text to everyone Hannibal knew, with encouragement to bring anyone else they knew, an additional paper invitation had gone out to Liliana because Hannibal enjoyed his calligraphy and thought she would appreciate it, and Hannibal was ready for guests.

[If you have ever crossed paths with Hannibal (and your name is not Anakin), you got an invitation.
Hannibal had been feeling very creative lately, so he'd spent yesterday gathering plenty of ingredients in creative ways. Today, he was in the kitchen making use of them.

When the nicely plated sides started singing along with the opera he had playing, he raised an eyebrow at them, then turned back to the main course. Fandom did love its quirks. And the potatoes did an excellent harmony with the fennel root.

[Mostly just for fun, but feel free to drop by or call!]

comments

It had been some time since Hannibal had hosted a dinner party; he considered it well past time he did so. And it wasn't as if he was going to not celebrate a holiday that revolved around food.

He'd had the entire place deep cleaned after confining the cats upstairs (by the mechanism of putting Beethoven in the bedroom, watching him refuse to move from a comfortable bed, waiting for Joni to race in after him, then shutting the door), in case anyone was allergic. There were enough vegan options that nobody could say he hadn't made an effort, and plenty more things for the meat eaters. Drinks for the children that wanted to be proper, and drinks for the adults (that he would not be policing if the children did not). There were hired waiters to wander and offer food, and tables full of food for those that preferred to get it themselves. And there were discreet plastic bags at one end, because he had no objections to people taking some for later, but dear god, please keep it out of your pockets.

The dining table was set, but he was aware Fandom tended toward the casual, so there were also end tables and coffee tables with napkins and such. The music room was shut, with the hope that anyone going in would have at least one free hand for the knob, and thus would be less likely to get food everywhere. Downstairs, the pool table and dart board were available, and through the great room was a door to the backyard, if it wasn't too cold and someone needed a break.

Hannibal would still be in and out of the kitchen for a good portion of the time, but that was his happy place, after all.

[Up early for great time zone and holiday-play justice!]

comments

Hannibal had mostly spent this week off-island indulging in his...hobbies, but he did still have cats that needed seeing to, so he was back every evening. He never had slept much, though, which he was grateful for when he woke up early to a Fandom oddity he enjoyed but wasn't quite prepared for.

He smiled, looked his form over in the mirror to make sure it was more or less what he remembered, then went to get dressed and pull out this season's clothing from his closet. The one problem with this being sporadic was there was never time to properly tailor things when you bought them!

An emergency tailor visit (helped by portals) later, and he was back in properly fitting new clothes and humming as he made breakfast.

The cats seemed totally unfazed.

[Open to anyone who wants breakfast and/or phone calls or texts about coping in their new bodies!]

comments

Hannibal had invited Liz and her guests over for dinner, so now he had made plenty of food, since he imagined someone of Hellboy's stature ate quite a bit. There was garlic-crusted rack of lamb, roasted brussels sprouts, carrot souffle, rosemary roasted potatoes, and vanilla poached pears and eclair cake with chocolate ganache for dessert.

He'd made up the table and was ready for visitors, but contrary to most dinner parties, the cats had been encouraged to stay downstairs.

[Expecting visitors, but hey, open to drop-ins, too!]

comments

That meant the kitchen was free for Hannibal to try his hand at soft pretzels, both plain and with a variety of fillings.

Between Liz living here and Guillermo coming to visit, there would be more people here than there had been in...far too long.
Hannibal enjoyed Thanksgiving; there were few other holidays as intrinsically focused on food. He'd decorated, and Margo and Eliot had helped, and the house sparkled (in some places literally). There were illusory autumn leaves drifting around, a tasteful centerpiece with pomegranates and yams among foliage, and of course, the food.

While people were wandering around and chatting before the meal, there were baked camembert and raspberry mini tarts, pate, fig jam, and walnut toasts, and an assortment of sashimi.

For dinner, there were roasted pumpkin soup, spatchcocked turkey with anise and orange, seared scallops with shaved brussels sprout salad, spicy cranberry chutney, celery, green bean, and tofu salad with chile crisp, honeynut squash with radicchio and miso, smashed green beans with lemony sumac dressing, and dressing.

And for afters, there were chocolate fondant cake with frangelico caramel sauce and gold leaf champagne-poached pears.

And throughout, there were a number of good wines and cocktails to be made, plus fresh-brewed gourmet coffee or good tea.

Now he was just ready to welcome his guests!

[OOC: Dang it, I meant to have this up a lot earlier. And skewered.

So he had on a cashmere sweater over a button-up and slacks, and the dinner was lamb kebabs with cumin chile spice and garlic yogurt, Turkish-spiced chicken kebabs with pomegranate relish, coconut-marinated short rib kebabs with peanut chile oil, marinated mushroom, tomato, and scallion skewers, grilled vegetables, and honey cake skewers with honey caramel sauce for dessert, along with home-brewed beer and coffee.

He had set the table using the new silverware, of course, and the box was the centerpiece of the table, surrounded by fall foliage.

Now he waited.

[For the ones expected!]

comments

Hannibal was planning on a Thanksgiving dinner this year, and since he hadn't gone all-out in a while, he thought making use of someone else's cachet might help. Not to mention that he simply hadn't had anyone to plan this sort of thing with for some time, and he was looking forward to it.

So, for this evening, he had invited Margo and Eliot over to view his home and his resources. And he wasn't about to do that without feeding them.

There were sweetbreads in butter with mushrooms, roasted white asparagus with herbes de Provence, fried stuffed squash blossoms, a good Côtes de Provence rosé, and chocolate liqueur souffles for dessert.

Now he just had to wait for his guests.

[For the ones mentioned!]

comments

One thing Hannibal had learned by having Dwight-as-a-dog stay with him for a while: he was definitely a cat person. Oh, Dwight had retained enough intelligence not to annoy the cats (and to be housebroken), and he needed very little special care; it had been remarkably easy to adjust to another animal in the house. But Hannibal definitely preferred the cats.

Which he supposed was good, as he'd have them for life, and Dwight only until the island deigned to change him back.

Anyway, this morning he woke up, let Dwight out, told the flamingo sternly that he was not allowed in the house and should go be with the rest of the flock on the lawn, made coffee, and watched the flamingo and Joni play on the porch, and now he was making breakfast for <s>four</s> five, because there was nobody here to call him on feeding the flamingo.

comments

Hannibal had been up late, talking with Mischa. Mostly listening to Mischa and watching her play with the cats, really.

Fortunately small children got about as little sleep as he did, so they were up again reasonably early. After a solemn discussion, they had agreed that lots of people might need breakfast, even if it was early or late or they'd already had it or they only ate weird food, so Hannibal sent out a text to everybody he knew.

Breakfast for you and any guests today, if you'd like. There will be plenty of coffee.

Then he headed into the kitchen, Mischa in tow.

[OOC: If you know Hannibal and/or are a teacher and/or anybody else might have mentioned it to you and/or you happen to be wandering by, there will be breakfast and brunch foods and drinks!
Well. The house was back where it belonged. That was something.

The patio was a wreck, the generator was half-buried in the lawn, there were no water, electricity, or gas (though at least the latter had been capped rather than leaking for weeks), and everything was once again a mess.

The harpsichord, for a wonder, had ended up upright and unharmed.

The shelves and cabinets that weren't built in or bolted to the walls were not. The books were everywhere. Clothes were everywhere.

He set down the cat carriers and let out the cats, who sniffed around and headed upstairs to hide under the bed, and the flamingo, who squawked and flapped and ran to hide in the fireplace.

He called the hotel to book the gourmet suite. Possibly for a week or two.

comments

Well, Hannibal could tell from his watch it was the Fourth of July; the hole didn't seem inclined to grace them with fireworks. Which, given this lot, might be a good thing.

He'd like to have had a dinner party at least, but it wasn't wise to go all-out when they didn't know how long the food would have to last. He refused to subsist on the chips from the bowling alley.

Instead, he brought out a few bottles of alcohol and some summer sausages and cheeses. He opened the front door and made sure light was shining out to lure in anybody that felt like coming.

If not, it would just be him, the cats, and the one inexplicable glittery flamingo, who was welcome to stay inside as long as he didn't claw the place up or cover it in excrement.

It was...a sort of holiday.

[Open to anyone in the hole!
Later today, Hannibal planned to open his office. But for now, that meant getting things in order: dressing in a nice suit, preparing coffee and hot water for tea, finishing up the scones that would be snacks, feeding the cats, pretending not to feed the glittery flamingos, and going through his voicemail to make certain there hadn't been any last-minute cancellations.

It was a busy morning, but a good one.

[Expecting one, but open before he gets there!]

comments

One of the island's two currently resident Spider-men. Currently living above Diaz and Ass with Diaz. He is obviously the ass. He's also a smart-ass, part spider, and a genius.

The Sith:
Lana Beniko (unusual_sith). Last infopost here. Just graduated and is hanging about for the summer before she goes ex-pat and has...oh, god, a ton of canon.

The Cannibal:
Dr. Hannibal Lecter (sharp_man). Last infopost here. His husband Jono Starsmore decided Fandom was too much and went home; Hannibal went with him. Recently, Jono died. Since he is an X-person, and he is in canon functionally immortal, Hannibal is unconvinced that this is permanent, but sees no reason to hang about in a place even more dangerous than Fandom, so has returned to the island to live his life until and unless he comes back. [OOC, though, please note Jono is not returning.]

The Ghost:
Bob! (nuclear_snide). Main infopost here. Hrothbert of Bainbridge is returning for the summer, because I missed the snarky bastard. He's just been spending his time since he was last on the island trying to keep Harry out of trouble (yeah, good luck with that).

Me:
Last year I got a new job at the same company, so I'm mostly not on phones all day long, yay! I do have a lot more meetings, though. Ah, well, it's a tradeoff. Current cats are MB, Lamont, and Gabriel (who is not a void).
After Vatalija had somehow managed to set small fires in the kitchen, living room, and downstairs bathroom, Hannibal had decided that redecorating was in order. He'd spent a while going over possibilities and finally decided upon some that he liked.

Then, in rearranging some things, he'd found one of her hair ties and made the mistake of picking it up. Precisely how it exploded he had no idea; he was definitely blaming her other father for this one.

Now he just had to try to get Beethoven into a carrier to get him outside before the house burned down. And then keep him and the sparkly lawn flamingos far away from each other.

[Open if anybody wants to gawk at a house fire!]

comments

Hannibal was feeling less murderous this morning, so he was up and humming as he made coffee and considered breakfast. Joni twined around his ankles as he tried to fix the cat food, despite his assurances that it would get to the dishes faster if she waited patiently with Beethoven.

He caught movement out of the corner of his eye, and looked up to see Angela on the back porch waving at him. He smiled and went to let her in.

"It's that weekend, is it?" he asked as they hugged.

"Must be," she answered cheerfully. "Is Dad still asleep?"

"Ah, no," Hannibal answered regretfully. "He is unfortunately dead at the moment."

Angela sighed. "Something X or Fandom?"

"X," Hannibal answered. "I'm staying here now, but I've left him a note."

"And now you have me," Angela answered with a smile. "So you won't be lonely for the weekend. Besides, you know what this means."

"Pancakes and texting everyone?"

"You start the pancakes, I'll send the text," she said cheerfully, grabbing his phone.

Soon a text went out island-wide: If you have kids or want to hang out with them, bring them to Dr. Lecter's house! 22 Phoenix Way, breakfast for all provided! Angela sent it to everyone in Hannibal's phone, the teacher and student groups, and anyone else she could remember that might be on the island now.

[Open post!]

comments

Hannibal had moved back to Fandom, and that clearly demanded a housewarming party. He could put it off until next week, but where was the fun in that?

So, Hannibal had sent out invitations to everyone on the island that he knew or that had a publicly accessible email address. dinner party tonight, 22 Phoenix place.

He had made an entire menu for the evening. If it largely consisted of things like chocolate, oysters, asparagus, figs, and so forth, well... This was Hannibal.

[open party is open!]

comments

He preferred it here anyway.

This was perhaps the exact wrong week to do that.

Hannibal was taking a lot of time meticulously sharpening his knives and dusting. So much dusting.

Open to anybody who wanders by, I guess!

comments
